Welcome to the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant

Located in San Francisco’s historic Ferry Building, the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant & and Wine Bar offers the most interesting and delicious wines from artisanal producers around the world. While striving to find these gems of the wine world we often can arrange exclusive access to our discoveries.
While many wine shops are run by one or two buyers supported by a crew that is rarely encouraged to taste the wine, Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant is a very different animal. With decades of combined wine industry experience.

Our Wine Bar is the perfect place to explore the wine regions of the world and try new and amazing wines!

On any given day, you’ll have the opportunity to chose from 15-20 different wines by the 2 oz. taste, the 5 oz. glass, (in some cases) the half bottle, and the full bottle. We think flights are both fun and educational, so we have those for you to consider as well.

In addition, anything from our shelves can be purchased and poured for retail plus a $6.00 corkage fee.

With Cowgirl Creamery and Acme Bakery just a few steps away, it’s our pleasure to offer fine cheeses and freshly baked breads from our neighbors. We also serve a selection of charcuterie, olives, caviar and more!

Join us at our wine bar for one of our lively, entertaining events!

Come taste some of the world’s most rare and celebrated wines and the people who make them famous. This is a great opportunity to enjoy delicious wines and chat in an intimate, personal, yet casual atmosphere with the types of artisanal producers from around the globe that we love to feature here at the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant.

About Us

Voted Best Bay Area Fish Market!

In a world of mass-produced foods and chain stores, there stand a few owner-operated businesses that strive to offer to their communities a refreshing alternative. San Francisco Fish Market is one such business. For seventeen years I owned and operated Rockridge Fish in the Market Hall in Oakland. My staff and I treated our customers to a dazzling array of seafood products and worked hard to educate them about the joys of cooking with and eating fish. Many of our customers followed us to our new location in San Francisco’s historic Ferry Building, where we’ve been carrying on the tradition since January, 2004.

At San Francisco Fish Company, my goal is to showcase the best possible picks from the sea – which I hand-select personally – and provide these to my customers in every form: as raw product, prepared and ready to cook at home, prepared and ready to eat, or cooked to order. And I want to help educate my customers, in a comfortable, inviting setting, about the many benefits of fish and seafood and how to prepare it. I’ve worked in many kitchens and with many chefs, which has taught me a lot about seafood and how to prepare it. Everything in my store is home-made, with two exceptions: seaweed salad and smoked salmon, because I found the right provider of these products. We offer a wide selection of beautifully displayed raw fish from around the world, and I pick the best of what’s available each day. The offerings depend on the season, fishing restrictions, the weather, and other variables that contribute to what is available. The challenge is to provide every day the awesome variety and value that my customers have come to expect, and it’s a challenge I love.

Whether you want to cook at home, grab something on the go, ship something special somewhere else, or come hang out in our seating area, we’ve got you covered. We care about your business and we want you to enjoy the experience of coming to our store and to the Ferry Building. So if you’re a seafood lover or just a food lover, live in the area or passing through, make the Ferry Building and San Francisco Fish Company a priority; we guarantee you’ll love it!

Our start was simple. Patti Furey Crane, Mariposa’s founder, craved high-quality sweets while pregnant with her first child. Finding few options at the time, she set to baking them herself. And so, in 2004, Mariposa was hatched. Mariposa’s mission – create wholesome, hand-crafted food using the finest natural ingredients.

Mariposa’s first few years were spent in a shared kitchen in West Berkeley, California. Our batches grew too big for those ovens, so in 2006 we built a new place to rest our wings — a dedicated gluten-free kitchen in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland, California. This certified green bakery also houses our first retail bakeshop.

In 2009, we fluttered to a second home – a Kiosk in San Francisco’s Ferry Building. Mariposa’s presence in this food purveyors’ paradise enabled us to bring daily bread and hand-crafted treats to San Francisco’s gluten-free community. Two and a half years later, we migrated South in the Ferry Building and opened Mariposa’s SF Bakeshop, est. 2012.

We have a passion for – the baked goods we make, the creative journey we’re on, and the communities we serve. Thank you for being a part of our story …

Chanoyu literally means “hot water for tea.” This procedure of making and drinking powdered green tea is a form, definite and regular. It cannot be defined as to content. That is for each person, each occasion to decide. While chanoyu may be a solitary activity, more often it is done within a small group of people In the words of Sen Genshitsu, fifteenth generation Head Tea Master of the Urasenke Tradition of Chanoyu, “Strange to say, this tranquility [of sitting alone] will deepen even further when another person enters the microcosm of the tearoom and joins the host….That we can find a lasting tranquility within our own selves in the company of others is the paradox.”

To make the Way of Tea accessible to all, the Urasenke Foundation in Kyoto Japan has trained qualified tea instructors and sent them to teach the Urasenke Tradition of Chanoyu outside Japan. At present the Foundation maintains direct teaching centers in twenty major cities throughout the world. In 1981, representatives Christy Bartlett and Michael Kane , were sent to San Francisco to establish and direct the Urasenke Foundation San Francisco.

Since that time, the Foundation has energetically served the Northern California community with wide-ranging programs for museums, elementary and secondary schools, universities, and numerous community groups. Programs usually are tailored to the interests and needs of each particular group. Examples include slide and/or spoken lectures on chanoyu history, esthetics, philosophy, and associated arts; hands-on workshops involving the placement of flowers for tea, the carving of bamboo tea scoops, or the preparation of tea sweets and kaiseki cuisine; seminars on topics such as teabowls, guest etiquette, or hosting tea gatherings; and of course numerous opportunities for active participation as a guest in authentic tea gatherings. Past sponsors of programs include the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, the Minneapolis Art Institute, the Denver Art Museum, the New York Chanoyu Center, UC Berkeley, Mills College and the Consulate General of Japan. Founding director, Christy Bartlett also travels throughout the United States providing similar master classes, lectures, and workshops to Urasenke Associations in North America.

As a member of the Urasenke Foundation of San Francisco, you are offered a unique opportunity to savor the heart of the Way of Tea. All levels of Membership benefits include: mailings containing invitations to tea gatherings, lectures, and workshops on the Way of Tea and related arts; consultation and use of the library by appointment. Certain Membership levels also include the benefit of selected publications in either Japanese or English language.
